Cultures tab & culture packs
The Cultures page (/cultures) helps you study how Scripture meets different cultural instincts — alignments, careful differences, and verse maps — without ranking people or peoples. Culture packs are study aids, not judgments. Christ gathers one people from every nation (Revelation 7:9).
Beyond mode tool. Deep links: /cultures, /cultures?theme=hospitality, /cultures?pack=biblical-greek.
Why use Cultures?
- Prepare for cross-cultural ministry or partnership (e.g. Western + CI City).
- Hear OT / NT historical distance (Biblical Hebrew / Biblical Greek packs).
- Practice multi-generational listening (Boomers + Gen Z, etc.).
- Engage internet / meme fluency (Meme pack) without dismissing or idolizing the feed.
- Listen with a Big Five personality lens (study notes on OCEAN traits—not a quiz or diagnosis).
- On Fellowship, see every culture theme that maps to the verse you are reading.
Packs available (12)
All packs share the same 15 themes and large verse maps (curated seeds + TSK/Tapestry expansion). Regional and generational packs use the shared seed set; biblical-world, meme, and big-five packs add extra thematic seed anchors so those maps stay topically stronger. Study copy (summary, alignments, differences) is always pack-specific.
1. Regional / national sketches
| Id | Label | Focus |
|---|---|---|
western | Western | Broad North Atlantic / European-influenced patterns |
ci-city | CI City | Ivory Coast urban (e.g. Abidjan-style) generalizations |
ci-rural | CI Rural | Ivory Coast village / agrarian generalizations |
Not every person in these regions matches the notes. Use as a listening lens.
2. Biblical-world sketches (historical settings of the text)
| Id | Label | Focus |
|---|---|---|
biblical-hebrew | Bib. Hebrew | Ancient Israel & Second Temple Jewish settings of the OT world |
biblical-greek | Bib. Greek | Hellenistic / Greco-Roman settings of the NT world |
Important: These are historical cultural lenses for reading Scripture, not modern Israeli, Jewish diaspora, Greek national, or Orthodox cultures. They help notice kinship, land, Torah, temple/synagogue, polis, patronage, honor-shame, and household codes as the text assumes them — while the gospel both inhabits and judges those worlds.
| Pack | Especially helpful for… |
|---|---|
| Bib. Hebrew | Torah, Prophets, Writings; covenant, land, feasts, exile, gate elders |
| Bib. Greek | Gospels/Acts/Epistles; polis, patronage, rhetoric, household codes, emperor cult |
3. Generational sketches (Western-influenced church contexts)
| Id | Label | Approx. birth years | One-line focus |
|---|---|---|---|
gen-boomer | Boomers | 1946–1964 | Institutions, work identity, postwar church as hub |
gen-x | Gen X | 1965–1980 | Pragmatism, distrust of hype, sandwich generation |
gen-millennial | Millennials | 1981–1996 | Digital nativity, authenticity, mobility, justice hunger |
gen-z | Gen Z | 1997–2012 | Smartphone-native life, identity, anxiety, short-form media |
gen-alpha | Gen Alpha | 2013–present | Children / early teens — provisional notes for parents & ministry |
Year bands are approximate. Many people span cohorts; class, ethnicity, nationality, and faith history matter more than birth year. Never use a pack to label an individual. Gen Alpha notes are provisional (cohort still young).
4. Digital / internet sketches
| Id | Label | Focus |
|---|---|---|
meme | Meme | Global internet meme culture — remix, irony, viral humor, in-group references |
Important: This is not a birth cohort and not “everyone online.” It describes communication instincts common among people fluent in meme formats (any age). Platforms and slang change quickly; the pack aims at durable patterns (speech ethics, shame, time, community) for discipleship — never to mock someone as “just a meme person.”
| Pack | Especially helpful for… |
|---|---|
| Meme | Youth/college ministry, digital-native small groups, teaching on speech (Eph 4; James 3), irony vs sincerity, attention and Sabbath |
5. Personality (study lens)
| Id | Label | Focus |
|---|---|---|
big-five | Big Five | OCEAN trait names (Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Neuroticism) as a discipleship listening lens |
Important: This is not a personality test, not clinical diagnosis, and not MBTI® / Myers-Briggs® or any commercial inventory. Notes are original study aids that map common trait tendencies onto the same culture themes as other packs. Never use a pack to label an individual. The Big Five model is mainstream psychology; trait names are used in ordinary scientific sense. Optional public-domain questionnaire items (e.g. IPIP) are not embedded in this pack—only original prose and Scripture maps.
| Pack | Especially helpful for… |
|---|---|
| Big Five | Small groups, pastoral care and listening, marriage/family friction without type-casting, comparing “how we hear” speech, community, authority, and suffering |

Use these ids in deep links: /cultures?theme=<id>.

Each theme card shows:
- Summary — short cultural sketch for that pack
- Alignments — goods that often resonate with Scripture
- Differences — careful notes (descriptive, not pejorative)
- Verses — KJV refs: curated seeds plus related links from the OpenBible TSK graph (same family of data as Tapestry), ranked to prefer multi-seed topical links
Verse maps are large (on the order of thousands of links per pack) so Fellowship can attach themes to many navigated verses.
How to use the Cultures tab
- Globe → expand Culture packs (collapsible; grouped as Regional / Biblical world / Generational / Digital / Personality) and download only the packs you need. Settings links Open Globe for pack work.
- Drag installed packs in the Display order list on Globe to set how they appear on Cultures and Fellowship. Use the switch on each row to enable or disable notes without removing the pack.
- Open Cultures (Beyond mode).
- Choose a topic from the dropdown — downloaded packs show study notes (summary, alignments, differences) in your display order. Undownloaded packs are not shown.
- Verses for this topic appear once below the culture notes (shared verse map — not repeated in every pack card). Tap refs for the study menu (Read, Fellowship, Cross reference, Hebrew/Greek when allowed).

Biblical-world packs — study notes
- Biblical Hebrew — covenant people, land under YHWH, Sabbath/feasts, elders at the gate, hospitality to the sojourner, honor-shame and guilt before a holy God. Prophets critique idolatry and oppression inside this world.
- Biblical Greek — polis, patronage, rhetoric, household codes, emperor cult, public honor; the cross is shame and power (1 Cor 1). Especially useful for Acts and the Epistles.
Pair Bib. Hebrew with a modern pack to feel OT distance; pair Bib. Greek with Bib. Hebrew when teaching how the NT mission enters Gentile cities without erasing Israel’s story (Rom 1:16; 11).
These packs complement — they do not replace — the Hebrew and Greek language tools (/hebrew, /greek), which show interlinear original-language text.
Generational packs — pastoral notes
- Boomers — institutional memory, formal hospitality, work-and-mortgage adulthood; watch idols of control and privatized security.
- Gen X — earn-my-trust leadership, sandwich care burdens, allergy to hype; watch cynicism that blocks belonging.
- Millennials — authenticity, meaning at work, delayed milestones; watch consumer identity and thin roots.
- Gen Z — digital belonging, shame metrics, open anxiety; watch influencers replacing shepherds and “my truth” eclipsing Scripture.
- Gen Alpha — early formation under screens and AI; notes are provisional for households and kids’ ministry.
Meme (digital) pack — pastoral notes
- Strengths to honor — creativity, quick pattern recognition, ability to puncture pretension, shared laughter that builds rapport.
- Watch carefully — “just joking” cruelty (Prov 26:18-19), viral shaming, idle words (Matt 12:36), blasphemy-as-humor, feeds that never rest.
- Discipleship angle — teach speech that builds up (Eph 4:29), truth without contempt, Sabbath from the scroll, and hope deeper than cope-posting.
- Pair with a generational pack when age matters, or with Western when contrasting online vs offline norms.
Big Five (personality) pack — pastoral notes
Full article: Personality: Big Five study lens.
- What it is — original study notes using five broad trait dimensions (OCEAN) as a listening lens for how people may hear Scripture themes.
- What it is not — not a quiz, not a diagnosis, not hiring advice, not MBTI® or any branded assessment.
- Strengths to honor — noticing that believers differ in energy, structure, curiosity, and emotional reactivity without ranking them.
- Watch carefully — using traits to excuse sin, to pigeonhole people, or to replace repentance and spiritual fruit (Gal 5:22-23).
- Discipleship angle — adapt pace and pastoral care; still call every heart to the same gospel.
- Legal/content posture: original prose only; commercial personality inventories and trademarks are out of scope.
Fellowship ↔ Cultures
| Page | Role |
|---|---|
| Cultures | Topic-first: compare packs on one theme, full verse lists + other packs below |
| Fellowship | Verse-first: English (+ selected language packs), then culture notes for that verse in display order |
On Fellowship, the Culture section appears only when packs are downloaded; each card lists themes for the current verse in display order. Theme titles open Cultures with ?theme=…. Any installed pack type works (regional, biblical-world, generational, digital/meme, or personality / Big Five).
See Fellowship for the minimal verse reader (English + optional languages + culture notes).
Globe & install notes
-
Culture packs on Globe are collapsible (grouped). Expand the section for the Display order drag list (with on/off toggles) and download/remove packs by group. Settings selects reading preferences and links Open Globe.
-
Packs install from static files under
/culture-packs/*.jsoninto IndexedDB on this device. -
Download only what you need — eleven packs × ~500 KB each if all installed.
-
Cultures shows only downloaded packs and loads only those (no auto-install of selected-but-missing packs).
-
Verse lists for a topic are shared once under the notes — pack cards hold study copy only.
-
When pack version in the app rises (richer verse maps), stale installs upgrade automatically on Cultures load / culture refresh.
-
Removing a pack on Globe deletes that pack’s local data only.
-
Maintainers regenerate:
npm run data:generate:culture-packs(script:scripts/generate-culture-packs.js).
Pastoral caution
Use packs to listen better across contexts — never to stereotype individuals. Every culture (and every generation) holds goods Scripture affirms and blind spots Scripture corrects. The disclaimer on each pack and on the Cultures page repeats this.
