Famous textual variants (study notes)

Some passages differ between Greek manuscript traditions and between English editions. ZVBible navigates by KJV verse numbers and shows SBLGNT Greek when available. This page is a short educational map — not a full critical apparatus.

Policy: We never hide KJV English to force agreement with critical Greek. Missing SBLGNT rows show an honest unavailable notice. See Greek text traditions and Scripture fidelity.

How to use these notes

  1. Read the English verse in your chosen translation.
  2. Open Greek for SBLGNT wording (or note if unavailable).
  3. If the tradition matters for your study, compare a TR or Majority text externally until optional Greek packs exist (Unresolved U1).
  4. Do not treat red-letter, pictographs, or culture notes as text-critical evidence.

Mark 16:9–20 (longer ending of Mark)

ViewSummary
Longer ending presentMany Byzantine MSS and the TR tradition include vv. 9–20; KJV English includes them.
Shorter ending / omissionEarly witnesses (e.g. Sinaiticus, Vaticanus in standard discussions) end at 16:8 or have alternate endings; many critical editions mark 9–20 as disputed.
Pastoral noteResurrection faith does not rest on one disputed paragraph alone (cf. 1 Cor 15). Study carefully; do not weaponize variants.

ZVBible: KJV navigator includes the longer ending verses. Greek availability follows SBLGNT for those refs.

John 7:53–8:11 (pericope adulterae)

ViewSummary
Included in many printed BiblesFamiliar story of the woman caught in adultery; present in the TR and KJV.
Location / originality debatedOften marked as a later insertion or floating tradition in critical editions; MS placement varies.
Pastoral noteThe passage’s themes of sin, mercy, and judgment still call for holiness (cf. John 8:11 in the traditional form). Textual humility ≠ moral indifference.

ZVBible: English may show the pericope under KJV numbering; Greek may be absent or differ — check the unavailable notice and this wiki.

1 John 5:7–8 (Comma Johanneum)

ViewSummary
TR / KJV longer readingKJV has an explicit Trinitarian formula in 5:7 that is rare in Greek MSS.
Critical / most Greek MSSShorter reading without the heavenly witnesses clause is preferred in modern critical texts.
Doctrinal noteThe Trinity does not stand or fall on this single verse (cf. Matt 28:19; John 1:1; 2 Cor 13:14). Prefer honest text history over polemic.

ZVBible: English KJV may show the longer form; SBLGNT Greek will reflect the critical shorter tradition where applicable.

Acts 8:37 (and similar TR-plus readings)

ViewSummary
Present in KJVConfession formula before baptism in some TR-based English.
Absent in many critical editionsLacking in early Greek witnesses preferred by NA/UBS/SBL-type editions.

ZVBible: Same pattern — KJV navigation + SBLGNT when present; never invent Greek to match KJV.
