About ZVBible, installation, and common questions across the study hub

Foreword

An Encounter with the Word

You stand at the edge of the infinite.

Before you lies an application designed to accompany you as far into the Scriptures as your willingness and faith will take you. It does not prescribe a destination; it simply removes obstacles so that the text itself may open according to the depth you are prepared to enter.

This experience recalls the moment when Jesus called Peter to step out of the boat and walk upon the water:

“Lord, if it is You,” Peter replied, “command me to come to You on the water.”

“Come,” said Jesus.

(Matthew 14:28–29, BSB)

The surface that appeared impossible became solid under the disciple’s feet for as long as his gaze remained fixed on the One who invited him. In the same way, the Word of God invites every reader to leave the safety of the familiar shoreline and to venture into waters whose depths cannot be measured by human understanding alone.

ZVBible places that invitation within a single, coherent landscape. From the broad contours of the biblical story to the finest details of individual passages, the application allows you to move freely between the panoramic and the particular.

It is both a weapon and a source of sustenance. May it serve you well on the journey to which only the Word himself could have called you.

What is Encounter The Word?

Encounter The Word is the New-mode entry path: one Gospel chapter at a time (John → Mark → Luke → Matthew). Reactions, notes, prayers, and questions are saved locally in your browser via IndexedDB — not on a server.

When you complete a chapter, Read unlocks that Gospel for full chapter browsing. You can export your journey as Markdown or plain text, and switch to Equipping mode when you are ready for the wider study hub.

Where is advanced study help (verse mapping, Hebrew, Greek)?

Open the Study wiki for long-form notes on KJV↔OSHB verse mapping, Greek availability, Strong's, Tapestry vs Cross reference, modes, and more. Each article is grounded in what ZVBible actually implements.

Short per-tool tips are still in the menu Help guide on each page.

Can I hide the short descriptions under each tool?

Yes. Open Settings and turn Hide home descriptions to On. Home will show only tool titles and icons so more cards fit on screen. The setting is Off by default — descriptions stay visible until you change it.

Will my settings stick on Android (or iPhone)?

Usually yes. Preferences such as theme, mode, translation, and hide-home-descriptions are saved in this browser on your device — including when you install ZVBible as a home-screen app (PWA). They should return the next time you open ZVBible on the same phone and the same way you installed it (Chrome tab vs installed app).

They can be cleared if you wipe site data, uninstall the PWA, use a private/incognito window, or if the browser reclaims storage under pressure. Last-verse positions for Read, Cross reference, and Tapestry are stored together; Hebrew and Greek each remember their own last OT and NT verse separately.

For a safety net, use Settings → Download backup to export a JSON file, then Load from file after a reset or on a new device.

How do I install this as an application on my phone?

ZVBible is a progressive web app (PWA). You can add it to your home screen and open it like a native app. On first visit you get one prompt with three choices: Proceed without install (keep using the site), Install (home screen only), or Install and download (home screen plus the offline study pack). There is no second download prompt after Install. You can add the pack later in Settings. Optional language and culture packs stay on Globe.

iPhone or iPad (Safari)
  1. Open ZVBible in Safari (the built-in browser).
  2. Tap the Share button (square with an arrow pointing up).
  3. Scroll the share sheet and tap Add to Home Screen.
  4. Tap Add, then launch ZVBible from your home screen.
Android (Chrome)
  1. Open ZVBible in Chrome.
  2. When Chrome is ready to install, you may see an Install ZVBible dialog — choose Install or Install and download.
  3. If you do not see the dialog, open the menu (⋮) and choose Install app or Add to Home screen. Download the offline pack later from Settings if you still want it.
  4. Confirm, then open ZVBible from your app drawer or home screen.

After installing, ZVBible opens in its own window without the browser toolbar. When a newer version is available, you will be prompted to refresh so you always have the latest fixes and features. Download the offline study pack in Settings so core tools keep working from this device when Wi‑Fi is on but cannot reach the site — airplane mode is not required.

How do I report a problem?

The best way to report a bug or request a fix is on GitHub Issues for the ZVBible project. You need a free GitHub account to open an issue.

Hebrew verse mapping (KJV ↔ OSHB)

If KJV and OSHB references do not line up, or Hebrew is missing when you expect it, use the verse mapping report form. Include the KJV reference, the OSHB reference shown in the Hebrew reader (if any), and what you expected. See also the verse mapping wiki for verse-numbering warnings.

Greek text or Strong's mapping

Missing Greek for a verse, wrong word order, or a Strong's number that should map? Use the Greek NT data report form. Include the KJV reference, what Greek appeared (if any), and what you expected.

Other bugs (display, PWA, navigators, Tapestry)

For anything else, open a general bug report. Helpful details include:

  • What you were doing (verse or chapter, which section, phone or desktop)
  • What happened vs. what you expected
  • Browser and device (for example, Safari on iPhone, Chrome on Android)
  • A screenshot, if you can attach one on GitHub

You can also browse existing issues or open a blank report from the new issue page.
