Research spike: optional TR Greek & Latin version packs
Tracks U1 (optional TR/Byzantine Greek) and U2 (optional Latin Vulgate as a version, never as Greek) from Unresolved theological issues.
Constraints (non-negotiable)
- SBLGNT remains the default Greek original-language pane.
- Any second Greek base is an optional download, clearly labeled.
- Latin is never shown as “Greek” or “original NT language.”
- Public Domain / redistributable license only — same mission as English/FR/AR packs.
- No silent merge of apparatuses into one unlabeled text.
TR / Byzantine Greek — findings (spike)
| Question | Notes |
|---|---|
| Why users want it | KJV NT rests on TR-type Greek; SBLGNT is critical — honest divergence already documented. |
| Open data candidates | Investigate free TR / Majority Text Unicode corpora with redistribution rights (project-dependent; must be re-verified before shipping). Commercial NA28 dumps are out. |
| Product shape | Mirror optional language packs: Globe download → IndexedDB → toggle on Greek page “Greek base: SBLGNT | TR (optional)”. |
| Engineering | New fetch script, per-book JSON under e.g. data/nt-greek-tr/, loaders, availability notices when one base lacks a verse. |
| Tests | Same KJV refs; never invent words; dual-base unit tests. |
Status: Research only on this branch — no TR dataset shipped until license + pipeline PR.
Latin Vulgate — findings (spike)
| Question | Notes |
|---|---|
| Why users want it | Western church history, pre-Reformation English lineage, comparison reading. |
| Why not in Greek pane | Latin is a translation tradition, not the NT autograph language. |
| Product shape | Optional version pack like LSG/NAV: “Latin (Vulgate family)” under language packs, stacked on Fellowship/Read — not under /greek. |
| License caution | Clementine vs Nova Vulgata rights differ; only ship a clearly free edition. |
| UI copy | Always “Latin version,” never “original.” |
Status: Out of original-language UI by design; optional pack deferred until license-cleared source chosen.
Next PR checklist (when implementing)
- License memo in Licenses page
- Fetch + per-book split + loaders
- Globe install/remove
- Greek base toggle or language pack entry (Latin)
- Wiki update + e2e smoke
